Sleigh Barn Project

Woodlawn Museum has begun a project to preserve and transform its Sleigh Barn into a new education and program space. In recognition of his service both to Woodlawn as a Trustee and to the community as a volunteer, this project is being completed in memory of Jerry Kaufman. A special plaque indicating this, and listing project donors, will be installed in the building. Jerry was a strong advocate for the community centered educational role for the museum. This project aptly reflects his vision for Woodlawn- to learn more about Jerry's life click here www.stemcellman.com.

The Sleigh Barn project is part of Woodlawn's efforts to increase its educational outreach. The museum has also created and filled a new education and program development staff position. With assistance from a volunteer committee, a number of new programs and workshops are being planned for students of all ages. To learn more about Woodlawn's current programs, click here.

An original estate structure, the sleigh barn will be restored, heat will be added, and it will be equipped with modern furnishings and lighting. The space will be used for workshops, student programs, lectures, exhibits, and receptions. The Sleigh Barn will also be made available as a rental space for private meetings and small functions. Improvements, such as a space heater, fans, and track lighting will make the space more functional, attractive, and expand its use into the shoulder seasons. Income from the museum's Building Conservation Fund will finance a third of the cost, while the remaining funds have come from private donations, including a $10,000 donor directed grant from the Maine Community Foundation.
