Ellsworth – Woodlawn hosts the only nationally sanctioned croquet court in Maine! Let this be your summer to try something new. Today’s serious version of croquet is often referred to as “chess on grass”—a game of strategy, skill, and tactics—but for most, it’s a casual, somewhat lazy diversion. If you have never tried croquet and are curious, come on over on Saturday, June 4 from 10:00 am to noon and learn the basics. We will have coffee and treats as we show you how interesting and challenging this sport can be.
New this season will be an evening social croquet league, sponsored by Fogtown Brewery. Get three friends together and come out for five Wednesday evenings starting July 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Refreshments will be available each evening and discounts at Fogtown after play! $100/team gets every member a ball cap and a lot of fun. Limited to the first eight teams. There will be registration forms at Fogtown starting in June and the Woodlawn website. Must be paid by June 24
Croquet has been a favorite English pastime since at least the 1850s, when it reportedly migrated from Ireland to London, where it was played in a slightly different form from today’s version. Though this time-honored ball-and-mallet game has traveled the world, with players as distant as the South Pole, it is an English game through and through. The lawns of Woodlawn were set up for lovely afternoon games and we continue the tradition.
